Plan to identify pollution hot spots BY ANDREW KING

A plan is in place to identify air pollution hot spots in Hornby. Community leaders and residents will be asked to tell the office of Wigram MP Megan Woods where they think problems are. Those locations will then be forwarded onto Environment Canterbury which will assess the information as part of its ongoing investigation into the air quality in Hornby. A meeting involving Dr Woods, the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board, the city council infrastructure, transport and environment committee and ECan was held recently. Dr Woods was pleased with the outcome of the meeting. “The community board and I will work out the hot spots that need the most attention,” she said. “To do that we will work with community leaders and we are asking for more to come forward.” Community board chairman Mike Mora said it was not a major issue yet but they want to get on top of things like this. “We want to put a plan of action in place to get some monitoring, now and in the future,” he said. • Turn to page 2

Veterinary practice

OUR JERRY LEE a true survivor This is a great story of one very gutsy, tough, utterly loveable German Shepherd pup called “ Jerry Lee”. At just 17 months of age we have seen Jerry Lee over 30 times since his first visit for pup vaccinations. Luckily for us he’s a big softy and has never put up a fight to all our palpating and needle pricking. Occasionally to get us back he rips out the IV catheter in his leg and looks quite pleased with himself. Jerry Lee first presented with weight loss and inappetance over a year ago as a pup. He just was never fussed on eating – no food really tickled his fancy and he was offered the best premium foods on the market and lots of variety. He wasn’t growing as he should have for his age and he often seemed really lethargic and lacking in energy. He had diarrhea and vomiting intermittently, salivating often, but what really concerned his owners was that as a pup he just didn’t have the energy he should of had. He has been blood tested many times, xrays have been taken of his gut and Catherine has performed ultrasounds. There isn’t many tests Jerry lee hasn’t had. No abnormalities were really detected but we all knew he wasn’t right. Many times we treated Jerry Lee with lower fat intestinal moist food, occasional antibiotics, drugs to help with nausea and vomiting, pain medications and we kept his worming up to date. He’d come right initially but before long we’d see him back just flat and listless and basically anorexic. He was a real worry to his owners and to us.

In his wee short life he’s had three anaesthetics and come through them brilliantly. Jerry Lee never complains and honestly is the perfect patient to treat. He’s been under the knife to be neutered, he then had an emergency dash to the afterhours clinic as he suddenly developed a twisted stomach and spleen. Then most

recently I performed exploratory surgery to inspect his stomach, small and large intestines all his abdominal organs, biopsying in particular many sections of stomach, bowel, pancreas and liver. This is where finally we got a diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowell Disease – aptly called Eosinophilic, Lymphoplasmacytic, diffuse IBD!!! He’s a true battler and at least we have a diagnosis now. Treatment is complicated, lengthy, costly and it really places an emotional strain on everyone in the family as its very hard seeing your loved pet (and a baby at that), go through at times pain and discomfort. To be hit with IBD as a young pup is very unlucky but Jerry Lee is so totally loved and adored by his family who would do anything for him. It would be fair to say his vet bills have been large and thanks to PetPlan Insurance, a massive financial burden has been lifted from Jerry Lee’s family. PetPlan are covering the vast majority of all his care and we are all praying we can get this nasty disease under control so Jerry Lee can finally enjoy life to the fullest!! Pet Insurance for your new pup or kitten is something worthy of a discussion. Most pet insurance companies will offer 4-6 weeks free cover initially for your new pup or kitten, which gives you time to look at all the insurance options. We don’t sell pet insurance but we give you information on all the pet insurance companies out there for you to investigate the best option for you. Some cover pre-existing conditions which is a bonus. It makes life simplier for us as your pets veterinarian as we are able to do the very best in care, diagnostics and treatment for your pet with the financial worry removed. For more information on Pet Insurance or Inflammatory Bowel disease be sure to give the clinic a call.

AIR POLLUTION: Harry Brown thinks air monitors at his place would be a good place to start for Environment Canterbury. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

Plan to identify pollution hot spots • From page 1 “We want to sample the air at present and look to the future to see if it is improving.” But Hornby resident Harry Brown thinks it is a big concern and wants monitors put in at his place. “We are on the end of the tail of the smog from Ravensdown,” he said. “It is just consistent and it is damaging our properties.” ECan’s mobile air monitoring station is currently heading to Lyttleton for 12 months to produce data for that area which means residents in Hornby may

have to wait before they get their air tested. “They [ECan] don’t have enough money in the budget to get a second air quality monitor,” Mr Mora said. “David Bedford from ECan said they didnt have the reasorces to get another one.” Mr Mora said they had to find the bad spots first before the equipment was needed so they had time on their side. Another option is to use some equipment from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research while they wait for the ECan equipment. “It would gives us bit of an idea of what is going on with air quality,” Mr Mora said.

Pass mark for expanded school

▌IN ▌ BRIEF Rotary Club gets offer

The Rotary Club of Hornby has received an offer on its house at 4 Austin Pl. The club built the home in Rolleston to raise money for charity. It is the sixth home it has built to raise money in what its president calls ‘thinking outside of the box’.

BY ANDREW KING Hornby High School has just passed the 18 month mark of taking on year 7 and 8 pupils. It added 143 year 7 and 8 pupils – mostly from Branston Intermediate after it closed – and quickly formulated a plan to make the most out of the situation. With $2 million invested in new classrooms from the Ministry of Education, the school set about the task of including intermediate pupils. Principal Richard Edmundson was happy to take up the challenge of adding the extra two years to the school. “We were offered if we wanted to become a year 7-13 school and we jumped at it. We are fortunate to have great Ministry of Education support and it has worked very, very well for us,” he said. “We are not just tacking a couple of clip on lanes to the harbour bridge, we are actually redesigning the whole bridge for this. “So we are using this opportunity not just to remain like a year 9 to 13 school and add seven and eight, we are remodelling the whole school to become and integrated year 7-13.” Hornby High looked at Breens Intermediate School and saw how it had structured its classrooms for similar aged pupils. Assistant principal Sue Elley has been supervising the whole process.

NEW ADDITIONS: Hornby High School added another eight classrooms to accommodate year 7 and 8 pupils after the closure of Branson Intermediate. “We have set up groups of teachers sharing their plan and assessment so they can work flexibly with the children in what would have been in two separate classes,” she said. They work like this for the first two periods of the day. “That gives them flexibility around how to structure those two periods of the day who might lead, who might support, who might be taking a large group and who might take a small group,” she said. “At the end of last year we commissioned an external review of how things had gone with the addition of year 7 and 8 pupils,” Mrs Elley said. Acting head of the education infrastructure service Jerome

Sheppard said they spend a bit of money getting the school ready for the inclusion of year 7 and 8 pupils. “We spent $2 million on eight new classrooms for year 7 and 8 students at Hornby High School,” he said. “The school is also due to embark on a $24 million redevelopment, to be completed in 2018. “Building works are planned to take place in three major stages, while minimising student disruption and allowing the school to stay open throughout.” The independent review by Dawson McKenzie Consulting showed parents were satisfied with the communication from the school about how their children were progressing since joining

COMBINED CLASSROOMS: Two classrooms with two teachers to create a learning environment that benefits both pupils and staff. Hornby High. Most said that the first year had been a positive experience, student learning, opportunity to make new friends and have access to a wider school environment. Year 7 and 8 staff have felt supported by their colleagues throughout the school and appreciated the professional development and opportunities to collaborate with specialist teachers. “We have two groups of two teachers working in year 7 and have a group of three year 8s working collaboratively together,” Mrs Elley said.

Samuel Ross Weir has made an application to the RiccartonWigram Community Board’s Discretionary Response Fund for $300 towards the costs of competing in the Hamilton Spring 2015 Rubik’s Cube Tournament to be held on September 27. St John of God Hauora Trust (Waipuna) has made an application for $1000 towards the operational cost for the Carols by Treelight event at St John of God Halswell. Nikita Gapper has made an application of $300 towards the costs of competing in the Gymsports New Zealand Nationals to be held in Auckland on October 1. All applications will be decided on tomorrow night. • An application has been made by Taylor Grant for funding from the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board’s Youth Development Fund towards the cost of participating in the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic from November 7-15. The 20-year-old is a New Zealand representative lawn bowler. This is a international event which will provide a great opportunity for her to learn as a bowler and develop her game.

I run all of the sport for years 9 through 13 so I’m in charge of all of the teams finding coaches, getting staff to run different sports as well as facilities manager for the two gyms that we have. I also teach year 13 business studies on top of that too. That is a pretty hectic work load. Yeah, it is, I also help run the gators basketball comp which is pretty big in Christchurch, that also keeps me pretty busy. How long have you done that for? Well I have been at Middleton for five years now. Around October 2010 was when I came back. What is the drive behind it? I have always loved working with young people. The last 15 years since I left high school I have been coaching basketball, which was my profession. I spent five years overseas coaching basketball in the States. when you lived there. They were not my favourite team but I have a bit of a soft spot for them now that I have lived over there. So I spent about five years over there from around 2004 to 2009. When I got back I spent some time with the Canterbury Basketball Association just doing work for them for a couple of years before I came here [Middleton Grange]. Sport has allowed me to help out young people throughout their lives which has been great. Were you motivated by coaches throughout your schooling? Yeah, I played basketball and cricket all through high school. Basketball was my favourite sport and my coach, Dave Harrison, and a number of other coaches came through and taught me a range of different things, including that you have to put back into the programme that you have gained so much enjoyment out of.

better young men through sport Actually my first year out of high school I blew my knee out and had to have two knee reconstructions in a year and a half, so that confirmed the path of giving up playing and focus on coaching. Where did you grow up? I am Christchurch born and raised. I went to Middleton Grange so back at the old school. I lived in Upper Riccarton on Middleton Rd, so I walked to school. My parents have actually just sold the house last year, so they were there for 27 years. I now live in Halswell. They seem to have a fantastic track record of getting former students to come back and teach. Absolutely, nobody ever plans on it but it just seems to happen. Were you a competitive person when you were growing up? Always, I was very competitive. I played a lot of sports when I could. Did you transfer that into your coaching? I found my time in the States put things into perspective for me when I came back to New Zealand. Coaching in an environment where you can literally lose your job at a moment’s notice just for losing a game changes how you view winning and losing. I did quite a bit of coaching before I went as well, I was the assistant coach for the Canterbury Rams when I was 20. You come back here and you realise that

Look & feel good this spring

HANDS ON: Tim Bennetts enjoys working with young people and has returned from the United States to coach basketball. winning or losing at high school is not that important. The result is not as important as the process, if you get that right then winning will take care of itself. Don’t get me wrong – I hate losing, but in terms of getting fired up I leave that to the kids. Are you married and have any kids? I am married, have been for

about a year and a half now. Kids are on the cards but not quite yet. My wife actually works here at Middleton as well. I met her here a couple of years ago. She is from Gore but she got a job here so we started hanging out and things worked out well. What does the future hold for you, will you look to progress up the coaching ladder?

Quality NZ Skincare range

I don’t really know what I am going to do. As far as the coaching drive side of things that has gone really. I did that over in the States, coaching full time for five years. I had one of those moments where I looked around at some of the other coaches that had been in the industry for a long time and thought I’m not sure I want to be like you guys. One really telling moment was one of the first days I was in the States, I met one of my mentors Royce Waltman – the coach of the Indian State University at the time. He had won everything, he was the coach of the USA team at the time when Michael Jordan was playing. First question he asked me was do you want a family and I said ‘yeah it’s on the cards’. He said ‘well you don’t want to be a basketball coach then’ (laughing). Over the years, that became applicable to my life, we were working 85-90 hours a week so I realised he was right. So moving back home was a lifestyle decision. So full-time coaching is not on the cards anymore for you? No, not really. I mean the last week, Tournament Week, has been great. You live for it. Taking the team away and spending time with the guys on and off the basketball court and hopefully making them better young men who are positive contributors to society and that’s what I am looking to do. So I am good for now

but we will just see what comes around the corner. So it was a good week away was it? Yeah, they boys did really well and behaved themselves on and off the court so that is always good. We got everyone lots of rest during the tournament so come the final that really paid off. It was a tight game but we pulled away in the end a bit. You were in the final against Burnside High? Yeah, we were and they went into the break leading 46-40. They were playing really well at half time but after that we were able to dictate the tempo and slow them down a little bit. It is always the sign of a good side that can trail at the half then come back and clinch it at the end, is that something you pride yourselves on? Our whole team talk before the game was about how Burnside is an energetic side and they get really pumped up, really emotional, so we thought if we could weather that initial burst then we should be able to grind one out and that’s pretty much how it went. How good is it when a game plan comes off? (Laughing) Yeah, well we would have rather come out of the gates and smashed them from start to finish but knew that probably wasn’t going to happen. It is a high risk, high reward scenario when you play like that.

Affordable housing to benefit from changes to racecourse act Changes to a 137-year-old act will help pave the way for affordable housing in Riccarton. City council has publicly notified the Riccarton Racecourse Local Bill, which will be introduced to Parliament within the next six months. The Bill seeks to change the Christchurch Racecourse Reserve Act 1878 and help pave the way for a proposed new 600-home subdivision, a third of which would be affordable housing priced below $450,000. Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck said the proposed racecourse development makes good sense for Christchurch. “The Riccarton Racecourse area is radically different from when the Reserve Act was passed well over 120 years ago,”

Paeroa Reserve in Riccarton is the proud owner of a new $6500 solar table. It allows people in the park to charge their mobile devices while enjoying the outdoors. There is a checkers/chess board so that locals can sit and enjoy a game while they power up their phones or other devices.

she said. “It’s now a very established, urban part of the city, with great amenities, schools, shopping, and even a university nearby. “We still need more housing in the city, particularly new, affordable housing, so this development makes good sense.” The 38ha of proposed land, bordered by Yaldhurst, Steadmans and Carmen Rds, is owned by the Christchurch Racecourse Reserve Trust and is currently surplus to requirements. The trust has entered into a joint venture with Ngāi Tahu to begin developing the land in 2017, pending the outcome of the Government’s legislation, the city council’s processes under the District Plan Review, and public consultation.

Funding boost for groups BY ANDREW KING

CHECKMATE: Sue Ramsay (right) from the city council and Trisha Mitchell from the Deans Ave Precinct Society try out the new chessboard on top of the solar table.

WELCOME BBQ: Riccarton residents enjoy a barbecue in Paeroa Reserve to welcome their newly installed solar table. Around 50 people came to the event to check out the new table.

Thirty-six groups have received a funding boost from the local community board. About $209,000 was allocated by the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board from its Strengthening Communities Fund to groups in the Western News area. One recipient was the Avonhead Community Trust which received $8000 for its ‘Whole Village Project’. The project has school holiday programmes, Friday night youth

club and a recreation teacher for both Avonhead and Russley School. Avonhead Community Trust chairman Ian Tayton said the aim was to breed leaders. “We have had kids come right through from our school holiday programmes into the Friday night clubs and then onto the our church youth group and help run the programmes with us,” he said. “We get the kids out and about to places like Chipmunks, Willowbank, Orana Wildlife Park and museums.”

part in the House Singing Competition. Hamilton House won the School House Music Cup, with its performance of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. There were also performances

from the kapa haka group, the concert and jazz bands, the chorus, and the choristers. The night concluded with the whole school singing a medley of songs, celebrating the Anzacs.

DEMONSTRATION: St Thomas of Canterbury student Fergus Sharp (centre), 16, demonstrates new software to pupils and teachers from Aranui School.

Students use IT skills to help children learn St Thomas of Canterbury students have designed software to make teaching literacy and numeracy easier. ‘George’ was designed by Tim Marshall and Fergus Sharp alongside a team of others, with many hours spent at home designing, building and testing. They also liaised with the young year 1 pupils at Aranui Primary School in constant trailing, research and development. The project is voluntarily worked on by young people who want to make a difference in the world. It is an operating system which can be incorporated into any existing commercial computer system. It can independently tutor or support teaching of literacy and numeracy. The unique features are its affordable cost at $30, and the ability to change

the base teaching language to Maori or any language of the Pacific. The software is designed to be userfriendly, and received strong initial sales to schools and learning communities. A lot of work was done by students in the evenings and weekends – building hardware and reconfiguring software design. Six students from years 11 to 13 developed a working relationship with the pupils from Aranui Primary School, and also worked with Refugee Services. They also worked with Jade Corporation to build a series of computers to trial and develop the software. The New Zealand Public Service Association also supported the initiative as a contribution to a civil society, seeing strong literacy and numeracy skills as an essential building block.

Could you offer Cody a home? We are looking for an easy going family, in your area, to open their home and care for Cody (14 years). Cody wants to be part of a caring and supportive family, so that he has the best chance of a positive future. Cody has a great sense of humour and loves to make people laugh. He loves to cook, with burgers and porridge being a couple of his favourites. Listening to music is another passion, particularly the style you may enjoy on The Breeze. Perhaps your family could give him the support and guidance he needs? With the right care, support and opportunities, Cody will have every chance to become an independent and responsible young adult capable of reaching his full potential.

Westburn School fundraised to help send him, using the year 7 as a test case, to see whether they’d send more athletes in future. “It feels really good knowing I’m representing my school for the first time at the AIMS Games – it’s been quite an experience and the games are one of the biggest events I’ve been to,” Ezra said. He set personal bests in four of his finals, narrowly missing more medals in both the 200m individual medley and the 50m backstroke, but admitted exhaustion set in during his 100m backstroke final as he faded to sixth.

GRASSROOTS SPORT JUBILATION: The Rangi side celebrate as the St Margaret’s players sink to the turf in despair.

Rangi girls take home Friendly rivalry in league game Federation Cup

NEW RIVALRY: Christchurch Boys’ High School held its first ever day boys v boarders rugby league game.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School first XI hockey team won the Federation Cup in a nail-biting final in Tauranga. Taking on St Margaret’s College, the winning goal came from captain Charlotte Arthur in the final stages of extra time. The sides were locked at 0-0 after 60 minutes. The current Porritt Cup champions, Rangi Ruru topped their pool and had to defeat the School Premier League champions, Villa Maria to make it to the final. The accolades continued after the game for Arthur who was also named the team’s MVP and was also the tournament’s leading point scorer. Rangi Ruru’s director of sport Jo Fogarty said the team showed real

grit and determination in defence to take the win. “The game was very intense. Heading into extra time having faced a substantial number of penalty corners, the girls knew they had to switch their focus to attack in order to get the ball in the net,” Ms Fogarty said. Rangi Ruru has been the top Christchurch schoolgirls’ hockey team in the Federation Cup for four out of the last five years. Coaches John Radovonich and Rachel McCann were confident that this year they had the squad to make the finals again after missing out last year. “I knew we had the team to win it but that it would take a whole team effort. They produced that today and we’re thrilled,” Miss McCann said.

Christchurch Boys’ High School held its first ever day boy’s versus boarders game of rugby league. The student-driven game was a way for them to have a game of league and blow off some steam.

Headmaster Nic Hill said it was a great way to have a bit of friendly rivalry between the two. “It was great to see these guys making big, big tackles with a huge smile on their face while

doing it,” he said. “It was a one off but it may come around next year, it was studentmotivated.” The day boy’s managed to overcome the boarders 32-16.

A RICCARTON

GHOSTLY TALE Writen By Annette Bulovic

Facebook Historian for Riccarton House

When one thinks of the Austen Deans – awardwinning artist, mountaineer, World War II survivor – and the interesting life he crammed into 95 years, one could understand why he was the centre of a ghostly occurrence at Riccarton House that no one can really explain, even today.

O

n December 1, 1915, Riccarton House was filled with the cries of a newborn baby. This was nothing unusual to the then 59-year-old house; the walls and foundations had witnessed many births over the years but who was to know that this would be the last. The baby’s father, Alexander Deans, known to the family as Alister, was the sixth son born to John Deans II and his wife Catherine Edith in 1890. Even though the threat of a World War loomed over the house as it did over Christchurch at that time, I’m sure Alister took a moment to quiet his thoughts as he held his first born close to his chest. The baby was named Alister Austen Deans, but this young lad would grow up to be known as Austen. His mother Nora Knight, preferred to be called Norna, had grown up alongside Homebush in the neighbouring estate of Racecourse Hill. Maybe no one was surprised when the two youngsters formed an attachment that led to their wedding earlier in Austen’s birth year. Just like his grandfather, Austen seemed to be very much a honeymoon baby. It was the next day that really got the Deans talking. In the bedroom, referred to by Riccarton House guides as the ‘teenagers bedroom’ and the most

Jane Deans (McIlraith) (1823 - 1911) haunted’, Norna regained her energy tucked up asleep in bed. Next to her in a bassinet was baby Austen. The nanny worked quietly nearby when she noted that someone had entered the room. Upon turning to look, she saw an elderly woman with deep set blue eyes, small and fragile in frame, dressed in black, walk up to the bassinet and peer in at the baby. The curious nanny just watched as the woman simply turned away without a word or a glance and left the room. At the next opportunity, the nanny queried the rest of the house about the odd visitor. She was met with puzzled looks as there had been no guests to the house that day. When the nanny

explained what she saw, the family said that she had described Jane Deans to a tee. It seemed the Great Granny Deans wasn’t going to miss out on seeing the new addition even due to the fact that she had been dead for four years! Austen grew up with a great love for Riccarton House, so much in fact that he felt guilty it had surpassed his own family farm of ‘Morven’ (subdivided from Homebush in 1906) in his affections. At one stage in his adult life, he had even entertained the idea of purchasing Riccarton as his own. He had appeared in ‘The Press’ shortly before his death to express his sadness at the incoming demolition of some of the remaining Riccarton Farm

buildings (due to earthquake damage) that is now a part of Christchurch Boys High. He recalled how his cousins and he would play in the old buildings as children. I can’t imagine the grief that would have been in his heart at this news; after all, he was the last Deans to be born at Riccarton. Austen’s father Alister, enlisted for World War I the following year, along with his brothers and many other young Cantabs lads. Sadly, he was not to return. He was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on the October 4, 1917. Sadly, he never met his second born, David McIlraith Austen Deans, who was born on the same year.

Osteopaths spring to the rescue

A

s Spring comes along, many of us feel compelled to spring into action….dig the garden, clean up the house - inside and out, climb ladders to clean out guttering, tidy backyards, trim hedges etc. This sudden burst of physical activity, after a winter spent in semi-hibernation, can often cause pain and discomfort in different parts of the body, stopping us in our tracks. However, help is at hand from the osteopaths at Osteopaths on Ensors & Wairakei, where our UK trained professionals can bring relief, usually in just a few sessions. “There’s a misconception that osteopathy is only about bones and backs”, says osteopath Christina Creek, “but it can help with shoulder, hip, ankle problems and indeed any other musculoskeletal pain or indeed visceral pain, ie other internal problem.” “We don’t just treat the problem area,” Christina continues, “we look for the cause of the problem and treat that first.” Christina trained in the UK at the European School of Osteopathy, graduating in 1993, then went on to study paediatric

osteopathy in Melbourne, graduating in 1999. Results that Speak for themselves

H

er incredible results really do speak for themselves because Dr Lan Xiao’s patients are happy to tell anyone and everyone just how amazing and how quickly the results of their treatment with her have been. One patient, who suffered from chronic pain and depression for 4 years and tried both conventional and alternative medicine, says that she felt great after just one session. She’s keen to spread the word, saying that “it feels like a pressure has been lifted from her whole body.” Another who suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome for many years used to struggle to find the energy to do her work. Dr. Lan gradually gave her her energy back. “It pulled me back from the brink … and I will be grateful forever,” she says. Dr. Lan’s website is full of similar success stories, covering a wide range of ailments including everything from dyslexia to

addictions and arthritis to stroke recovery. But just how does it work? Acupuncture Without Needles stimulates particular points on the body, giving an instant release of energy and helps the body to heal itself. The treatment is not invasive or painful, and, as Dr. Lan explains, “the results are very quick and effective.” Her ideas are revolutionary and are captured in her book “Dr. Lan’s Reflexology Network.” In it, she explains that unlike many other practitioners, she has found that there are reflexology points across the entire body and not just in certain areas, and she believes that her successes are based on her wider understanding. Visit www.drlansreflexologynetwork.co.nz/ to see some of her amazing results, or call her on (03) 323 4168 or (027) 231 8388 to make an appointment. Treatment offered for headaches, facial and jaw pain

Physical Sense Gym and Physio, located in Colombo Street Sydenham, focuses both on helping people stay physically fit and healthy, and helping people to overcome various health problems.

A

s physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk explains, when our muscles tighten this can refer pain to many of these areas around the face and head. Dehydration can be the catalyst for tightening the neck muscle (SCM), which causes pain in the ear, forehead and round the eye and jaw joint areas. Tightening of the temporalis muscle can refer pain to the teeth, which can be confusing when the person visits the dentist to have it seen to and the dentist

can’t find a reason for the recurring pain. Teeth grinding at night and teeth clenching during the day are also a major cause of muscle tightening. Physiotherapy treatment for these problems is based on deactivating the ‘trigger points’ through hands-on massage therapy to relax the muscles, which is the least invasive and a very effective form of treatment. Dry needling is another technique used for muscle relaxation, but is only used with the client’s consent,

Ietje says. “We release the muscles to give immediate relief, and at the same time work on the cause. For example, we have a feedback headband that is worn at night to help people to learn not to clench their teeth while they’re asleep. We also work on the client’s cervical or neck part of the spine, where overuse can cause muscles to tighten, creating pain.” Teaching self-management of stress is an important aspect of the clinic’s treatment as well as teaching breathing techniques, which go hand in hand with managing stress.

The gym is open to the public for regular exercise classes, including step and spin bike, while also offering specialised classes for people with ailments such diabetes, osteoporosis, vascular problems and those who face difficulties following a stroke. Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. To enquire about specialised exercise classes or physiotherapy treatment, phone 377 2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz.

Music is taught as part of the performing arts curriculum in all classrooms but extra opportunities exist for students to learn music and to participate in our choir, orchestra, rock band and other music groups. We currently have students learning: cello; violin; piano; ukulele; guitar; flute; saxophone; clarinet and drums. Those students who learn are then invited to join and perform in our orchestra, string ensemble and rock band.
